Mekarya: Building Food Resilience for Hospitality Workers in Bali
Mekarya is an ongoing food security project based in Gianyar, Bali, that works directly with local communities to build food resilience through chicken farming. The project focuses on workers employed in Bali's hospitality industry—hotel staff, restaurant employees, and others whose incomes can be unpredictable due to seasonal tourism or external shocks. While these workers continue their regular jobs, Mekarya helps them raise chickens for eggs and meat using simple, low-cost systems that fit around their work schedules. This dual approach allows families to access a steady, affordable source of protein, reduce dependence on market-bought food during lean times, and even generate small additional income from selling surplus eggs or birds. By strengthening local food production at the household level, Mekarya creates a practical safety net that protects vulnerable hospitality workers from price spikes or income loss. The project also provides training on chicken health, feeding, and coop management, while fostering community cooperation and shared learning.
Ultimately, Mekarya demonstrates that even busy workers can participate in food production, building both climate resilience and economic security without leaving their primary jobs.
